One of the casualties of the war was this stunning wax image of Rizal by Guillermo E. Tolentino (later to be first National Artist for Sculpture). This image wore Rizal’s original clothes and had human hair stitched on the head and styled, allegedly, by Rizal’s own barber. It was the closest to seeing the National Hero alive but the Japanese decided to make a bonfire in the UP LIbrary and Rizal who was in the Filipiniana section melted away.
