Suspending/Continuing processes in unix terminal

 

To pause a certain process in linux, first identify the process id (pid) of the process you want to pause.

You can either use the system monitor or the top command in the terminal.

$ top

After identifying the process id, you can pause the process by typing the command

$ kill -STOP <pid>

To continue the process,  type the command

$ kill -CONT <pid>
